MILL HISTORY
|
The Historic Grafton Mill has a rich and
colorful past. Built in 1884 along the banks of the Milwaukee
River, it originally served as a gristmill producing White Lily
brand flour. During its peak the mill turned out over 100
barrels of flour per day. In later years the mill turned to the
lucrative business of manufacturing worsted wool. The Badger
Mills continued to produce and card wool until the early 1960s.
Today anyone with a keen eye can still detect wool fibers
leaching from the riverbanks. A more apparent vestige of the
woolen mill days is the Grafton Yarn Store, which still operates
as a specialty yarn store in its original location. The rest of
the three-story building has had many reincarnations over the
years. Today along with the Grafton Yarn Store, the old mill is
home to a growing community of artists.
